You Say Tomato… We Say Bloody Mary

bloody mary

Hello friends!  We hope our friends in the North and the Midwest are able to thaw out enough to enjoy today’s post. We would like to take credit for the catchy title, but we borrowed it from Mudpie.  They have the cutest Bloody Mary pitcher! This week is our first post for the month of February and we are kicking off a February series called Roses are Red…  In this series we will be featuring drink and recipe ideas that speak to our “hearts” in some way.

This week we are featuring a drink idea that we have had for awhile, but couldn’t find the right place and time to share it with you.  Now, at first you may think that Bloody Mary’s are not very romantic, but we beg to differ.  Ladies, this is the perfect beverage to make for your honey when you make him breakfast in bread or Valentine’s brunch.  Men, surprise her with breakfast and a nice cocktail to start off her Saturday or Sunday.

We have been fans of  Mateo’s Salsa for the last few years.  Mateo’s Salsa is made near us in Frisco, Texas. It is authentic and fresh tasting salsa, similar to salsa you would have at an authentic Mexican restaurant.  Once you try their salsa, you will never again go back to Pace.  No way!  So one day as Rhonda was shopping at Kroger, she noticed Mateo’s also had Bloody Mary mix.  Knowing the quality of their salsa, we decided to venture out and see what their Bloody Mary mix was like.  We are happy to report that their mix is very spicy, tasty and fresh.  It is perfect for an instant breakfast, brunch or anytime you feel like a Bloody Mary!  Mateo’s Salsa and Bloody Mary mix can be found at Kroger, Costco, Price Chopper, Hy-Vee, and Schnuck’s and many more fine retailers.

Here’s how to make this delicious Bloody Mary.  First rim your glass with some salt and pepper rim mix.

Next add two ounces of vodka to a glass filled with ice.  Bloody Mary’s are best served cold.

Fill the glass with Mateo’s Bloody Mary Mix.

Now for the fun part!  The best part about Bloody Mary’s is the garnishes.  In the realm of Bloody Mary’s, the crazier the better.  If you are having guests it is fun to set up a Bloody Mary bar where guests can enhance and garnish their own drinks.  You could even have a garnishing contest!

Here are some suggested garnishes to have on hand: celery stalks, stuffed olives, peppers, cherry tomatoes, bacon, chunks of cheese, pickled asparagus, mini dill pickles, pickled baby corns, pickled asparagus, jalapeno peppers, shrimp, sliders, let your imagination run wild!

Are Bloody Mary’s your thing?  Would you prep these for you honey as a Valentine’s Day surprise?  Let us know.  We would love to hear about it!

From Russia with Love

There are a few things every four years that cause business as usual to come to a halt in The Blind Pig household.  You may or may not be aware that on Thursday, the 2018 World Cup commenced.  Since then, soccer, or football as the rest of the world calls it, has been running on our TV almost 24/7.  Craig and Blind Piglet #2 are huge soccer fans, and don’t like to miss out on any of the action.  In honor of the World Cup, we are going to feature some cocktails with some World Cup flavor over the next few weeks.

Since the World Cup is hosted by Russia this year, our first idea was to feature a Moscow Mule.  However, we feel that has probably already been done, so we made a little twist on the Moscow Mule to create the Watermelon Mule.  Whether you are a soccer fan, or your feet have never touched the pitch, the Watermelon Mule is a beverage that can be enjoyed by all.

The Watermelon Mule is a great summer drink, and is easy, tasty and fresh.  Add 1.5 ounces of Seagram’s Watermelon Vodka to a rocks glass or mule mug.  Fill with ice.  Top off with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime juice.  Garnish with a wedge of watermelon and a lime.

It’s refreshing.  It’s tasty.  It’s like summer in a mug!  Now you are ready to sit back and relax in your hammock or watch a World Cup match.

Bonus Post: The Love Triangle

the love triangleHey friends, we are bringing you a bonus post this week. The idea of a bonus post was suggested by Rhonda’s friend, Melissa J.  Since there is so much going on — Olympics, Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras, we decided to try it out .

thelovetriangle3

In this post we are sharing a lovely drink that was invented by Rhonda.  Any similarities between this drink and others is purely coincidental.   Because we are releasing this drink idea so close to Valentine’s Day, we lovingly named it The Love Triangle.  We took advantage of garnishing it with heart shaped ice cubes.  However, this drink may not just be a weekend fling.  You may want to keep this sweetheart around for the whole year.

thelovetriangle1

The Love Triangle is made with a trio of main ingredients: vodka, pomegranate juice and diet ginger ale. (Thus “love triangle”…)  However, your heart won’t be pulled in three directions when you see how many calories are in this cocktail.  Only 88!  Yep, 88 little tiny calories.

So let’s get down to business.  How is this drink made?

thelovetriangle2

Pour one ounce of vodka, one ounce of pomegranate juice and juice from half of a lime in a rocks glass.  Add ice.  Top off with ginger ale and stir.

After one sweet sip of this drink, you will be torn.  Do you prefer the seductive taste of pomegranate?  Is it the bubbly ginger ale that has you giddy?  Or the smooth taste of the vodka that melts your heart?  You decide.

Merry Everything!

The Christmas season is upon us and our household is in full force.  It is amazing to us how much time Christmas takes –buying gifts, wrapping gifts, baking and making goody baskets and so much more!  We love every bit of it, but we are finding that there are so many things we still would like to do and Christmas Eve is only two days away!

One thing that we have been up to lately is planning for our New Year’s Eve Party.  We know. We know.  You can’t skip right over Christmas and go to New Year’s, but we do need to plan ahead.  We want to give you a little sneak peek of what we have in mind.

We are working on Pineapple Infused Vodka.  This is the first time that we have infused vodka of on our own.  We talked with a few experts and it sounded easy, so what can go wrong?

pineapple infused vodka1

For our infused vodka we used Seagram’s Extra Smooth Vodka and fresh pineapple.  We have a large container, so we used about 2 and 1/4 liters of vodka and 2 fresh pineapples.  First chop up the pineapples and place them in the container.  Next pour in the vodka until the container is nearly full.  Wait for 2 weeks.  Yes, it is that simple!  Easy. Fresh. Tasty.

Craig did notice that after the first day we were losing some of the liquid to angel’s share.  Angel’s share is distiller speak for evaporation.  Distillers of years past noticed that their alcohol was disappearing within the bottles and kegs. They came up with the term angel’s share to say that the angels must have taken a drink when no one was looking. In order to combat the angel’s share, Craig sealed up our container with a little extra packing tape.

Weeks passed as we made final preparations for our NYE party, we taste tested our concoction that had been infusing for two weeks.  It was quite strong and not very sweet.  We made a few adjustments by adding a cup of sugar.  Kool aid has a cup of sugar and it tastes great, right?  The liquid was still a little overpowering, but easier to drink.  Over the next few days we tasted it again and again.  We will say that it did get much better with age. It turned out to be quite a satisfying drink with a hint of pineapple sweetness.  Yummo!

Here are a few tips if you are going to try this:

  • Think ahead!  As we stated above, you need to prep this at least two weeks in advance.  Ours needed more than two weeks to get to its prime.
  • Taste test it a day or two before your social event.  You want to have time to make some adjustments.
  • Make sure the fruit you are infusing is ripe and sweet. We think our pineapple may have been a little green, which caused our infusion not to be the sweetest it could be.

Now that we have tried this once, we would like to try it again with another fruit.  We will keep you posted!

You Had Me at Pumpkin Spice

Did we mention that Rhonda loves fall?  Along with the season of fall, Rhonda loves pumpkin spice.  She will try anything as long as it has pumpkin spice in the title… well almost anything.  She even has a shirt that she wears every fall to commemorate her love for pumpkin spice.  We don’t really know when this love of pumpkins began.  It may date back to her love of the fairy tale of Cinderella as a small child.

Imagine her delight when she found a drink with 5 simple ingredients that she can toast to her love of pumpkin spice. This drink meets the standards of easy and tasty. We hope that you, too, will be able to celebrate your appreciation for the flavor of fall with a toast to this drink as well.

Thanks to Craig’s colleagues who had dinner with us this week and taste tested some of our pumpkin recipes. It is always more fun to try out new recipes with friends and family!

Golden Pumpkin Spice Martini

  • 1 tablespoon of pumpkin puree
  • 1 oz. Seagram’s Extra Smooth Vodka
  • 2 oz. Kerrygold Irish Cream
  • 1 dash of pumpkin spice
  • 1 dash of vanilla
  • whipped cream and chocolate syrup for garnish

Add pumpkin puree, vodka, irish cream, dash of pumpkin pie spice and dash of vanilla to shaker.  Add 1 cup of ice.  Shake for 30 seconds. Strain.  Pour into serving glass drizzled with chocolate syrup for garnish.  Top off drink with a small dab of whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.  Cheers!

We dressed this drink up with some whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.  We drizzled the inside of the our martini glass with some chocolate syrup to accessorize the drink.  We first mentioned this garnishing technique back in the post  Who Needs Half-Price Shakes After 8?

Do you know how to correctly shake a drink? Rhonda used to shake drinks vertically until Craig pointed out that the correct way to shake a drink is to make sure that the shaker is horizontal to the ground.  Who knew?  It does make sense, though.  The ingredients mix better when the shaker is turned on its side.  So let us see you shake, shake, shake!

The Golden Pumpkin Spice Martini is the perfect fall drink.  Can’t you see your Thanksgiving guests sipping on this prior to their Thanksgiving Meal?  It is not too heavy and it is not too sweet.  It is a great drink for sitting around a fire with cozy blankets on a cool fall evening.  Let us know if you try it out.  We’d love to hear from you.
